Interview - Process: Walk me through what goes on in producing one episode. Before / During / After.

Behind the Mic | Behind the Mic with Host of Seeds of Success Podcast: Colin Walters

Arjun Sundararajan: Your process out walk me through, like, what goes on in producing one episode. Their preparation before, especially they you are bringing in a speaker as well as well as your server episodes, And then, like, when you are running this show, what sort of your set up and everything, And then, like, how do you do what do you do after?
Colin Walters: Yeah. Great question because there's there's a lot that goes into that. So I'll I'll start with the interviews. The interviews are something where I'll reach out to an an individual. If I'm proactively reaching out. I'll reach out whether it's a text, whether it's an Instagram, direct mess whether it's Linkedin, and ask if they'd be on the show and ask and and bring up a a very specific reason for why I want them on the show. And because I think that it is important to at least have an idea of what topics you wanna cover or what their specialties are. It's all about making them the the guest that is the expert and and making them look good.
Arjun Sundararajan: Right.
Colin Walters: In order for them to showcase their value and your audience to get value out of the out of the episode. And so I'll confirm that with them, get the get to go ahead the green light to do it. We'll... I'll send over some time. And we'll we'll schedule it into the calendar. I will then send couple different ball points of questions. Typically in either a a text message or an email so that they have it in both. And and then I I have, like, four questions that I run everybody through at the the episode. So those will be included in there. So What I like to do with the interview as well is if I have never actually met them, jump on a call, one week prior. In order to actually a get connected, have a a real conversation. And then it's just a way more natural and fluid conversation when you're on there. And then from there, you know, we'll go ahead and and jump on the show a week later and if it's not a week then it's, you know, at least couple days before, and and then do the episode. And then afterwards, then that's when I actually do post production. And stuff. So actually running through editing the video, chopping it up, putting in overhang all the, you know, the the audio and uploading it, that that sort of thing. So there's there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes,
Arjun Sundararajan: Alright.
Colin Walters: actually promoting in marketing as you know, and a lot of problems that you solve.
Arjun Sundararajan: Right.
Colin Walters: So there... There's a lot that goes into, you know, because you wanna promote it,
Arjun Sundararajan: Yeah
Colin Walters: beforehand, you wanna you wanna build the excitement, then you wanna actually
Arjun Sundararajan: Hi.
Colin Walters: do it. And then you wanna actually market it and promote it after production, And then, you know, there's so many different routes that you can go with it, and it get It's super fun because it's never ending. So that's interviews. That's interview process. And then with my episodes, the solo solo episodes,
Arjun Sundararajan: Right.
Colin Walters: every now and then, inspirational hit, and I'll just throw on throw on the microphone and just rip it and go for it because I think that there's something we said about capturing inspiration in the moment. Other times, I will actually write out a couple of bullet points about something that I'm thinking about. And or go through my notes and in my phone and actually see what some topics are that I've been thinking about lately. There are a couple bold points there.
Arjun Sundararajan: Right.
Colin Walters: Read through and say, yep. Alright. Cool. And then throw on the camera and go for it. There's plenty of times where You don't have this setup. You're not in your office. You're not in your studio. And I will pull out my cell phone. I will stand in a closet, and put clothes around me to make the sound quality as best as I can. Now we'll record it right there. To get the episode out. So it is
Arjun Sundararajan: That's.
Colin Walters: all across the board, the process is extremely chaotic at times, but it's about getting it done for me.
Arjun Sundararajan: Bye.
Colin Walters: And that's that's the bottom line. So I I hope that that helps clarify.
Arjun Sundararajan: No. I love it. I almost think that, like, you you have a medical process that would like, you would go through including from... Before during and make post production as well.
Colin Walters: Yep.
Arjun Sundararajan: But you also have, like, worst days on days that it doesn't like, you don't feel like doing that. You how always work around it and get
Colin Walters: Oh, yeah.
Arjun Sundararajan: things going, which is which is pretty impressive because a lot of people, like, tend to struggle with, like, that one week cadence and life comes in the way and like, things get busy, becomes much harder. So I I I love that. What you do
