Interview - Motivation: What inspired you to start running your own show? What were you trying to achieve with the show?
Behind the Mic | Behind the Mic with the host of Trade Show University Podcast - Jim Cermak
Arjun Sundararajan: You mentioned when you started this. So I wanna make take you back.
Jim Cermak: K.
Arjun Sundararajan: To that time. December twenty nineteen, what inspired you to, like, start running your own show. You know, when you launch the show, you should have had... This is my goal or, like, this is what I wanna achieve.
Jim Cermak: Yeah. So for me,
Arjun Sundararajan: What was back to you?
Jim Cermak: I wanted to help people, because I would go to shows and I would see... A lot of times, I was the exhibit. So I knew what to do and our companies and my clients, Adam... I had a marketing firm for a while. And my clients would rock these shows and just get great results. And then It was back in twenty nineteen Beginning twenty nineteen, I went to a new show as an ten Nd. And I hadn't been as an attendee for a while, and I walked through the show and I'm like, Oh my gosh. None of these none of these companies know how to how to do this. I I can help so many people. And And so I'm like, well, how do I help people? And then I I started listening to podcast, and I'm like, wow. Okay. A podcast is a way for me to get the message out. So my podcast is really more about training. It's not just it's not just entertainment. It's it's really a training and and information. So that's why I started it, because I really just wanted to get my the information I have in my head and get it out to the world so that companies can get better because I know that if exhibit, work the shows better, then the whole show is better.
Arjun Sundararajan: Right.
Jim Cermak: The whole grows, and then then it's gonna get better next year and next year and So that's that's why I started. By my goal was just to really get that information and out there. And then to start hopefully getting some clients myself, who who wanted to some one on one coaching this said, have listened to this and this is what happened. I started getting people contacting me and saying, I love the content. Can you help me? You know, can you help our company
Arjun Sundararajan: Alright.
Jim Cermak: And so doing Zoom coaching and doing some strategy sessions and things like that. It's been just fantastic of really enjoyed working with companies one on one.
Arjun Sundararajan: That's amazing. So it almost seems like which followed the other? Did you start, like, the a business for helping other people first, and then the part was a great way to like sort of get the word out or was it the other way around where doing the podcast you're realizing that, like, now, hey, I can spin off this as a business and I can actually, like, that, like, coaching clients, What what followed the other?
Jim Cermak: It was... They're both kind of done at the same time. It was
Arjun Sundararajan: Okay.
Jim Cermak: one of those things where I'm like, I wanna help companies.
Arjun Sundararajan: Right.
Jim Cermak: Because I had a had a full time job and I know a lot of podcast do and and So this is something, hey, I I can help people on the side on the side of my my traditional job. And I think that by getting that information out there and using this also as marketing for me, to get more more clients. And so it kind of all happened at the same time. I just saw saw the need out there and that there's a void in the marketplace for this kind of information and this kinda of coaching. And that's why I I launched the podcast.
